Annual Salary Calculator: How Your Pay Compares to the National Line
Use an annual salary calculator to see where your gross pay sits on the Australian salary index. Compare to the national line of $108,352 (index 100) and understand your position.
An annual salary calculator helps you convert your pay to a yearly figure and compare it to the national line of $108,352 (index 100) to see where you sit on the Australian salary index.
What is an annual salary calculator?
An annual salary calculator is a simple tool that converts your pay into a yearly gross figure. Whether you are paid by the hour, week, fortnight, or month, the calculator multiplies your rate by the appropriate number of periods to give you an annual number. That number is the starting point for understanding where your pay sits on the Australian salary index.
The salary index is a measure created by Salary Index to show how a gross annual salary compares to the national line. The national line is set at 100 and represents the full-time adult ordinary-time earnings reported by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. For May 2026, that figure is $2,083.70 per week, annualised to $108,352. If your annual salary equals $108,352, your index is exactly 100. If you earn more, your index is above 100; if less, below 100.
How to use the calculator with the salary index
To find your index, first get your annual gross pay using the annual salary calculator. Then divide that number by $108,352 and multiply by 100. For example:
- A full-time worker on the national minimum wage earns $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week. Annualised, that is $52,255. Their index is 52,255 ÷ 108,352 × 100 = 48.2. This means they earn about 48% of the national average.
- A professional on $150,000 per year has an index of 150,000 ÷ 108,352 × 100 = 138.5, or about 39% above the national line.
- A retail trade employee earning the industry average (index 75.9) would have an annual salary around $82,200.
The calculator helps you quickly see where you stand. You can also compare your index to state averages: for instance, New South Wales has an index of 101.2 (annualised $109,658), while Tasmania is 88.6 ($96,008). If your index is higher than your state’s average, you are earning above the typical full-time worker in that state.
Concrete examples across industries
Different industries have very different average indices. The industries page shows that Mining has an index of 154.7, meaning the average full-time miner earns about 55% more than the national line. In contrast, Accommodation and food services sits at 72.5, and Retail trade at 75.9. An annual salary calculator can help you see how your personal pay compares to these industry benchmarks.
For example, if you work in health care and social assistance (index 97.8), the average full-time worker earns about $106,000 per year. If your calculator shows you earn $110,000, your index is 101.5—slightly above the industry average and just above the national line.
Keep in mind that these are averages. Your actual pay may be higher or lower depending on your role, experience, and award classification. Modern awards set minimum pay rates that are often above the national minimum wage. The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes award rates, and many awards increased by 4.75% from 1 July 2026. The entry-level award floor is $25.74 per hour, which annualises to about $53,539 (index 49.4).
Tax, super, and take-home pay
An annual salary calculator usually shows gross pay, but your take-home amount will be less after tax and Medicare levy. For the 2026–27 financial year, resident tax rates are:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Plus a 2% Medicare levy on all taxable income. These rates assume you have claimed the tax-free threshold and do not include the Medicare levy surcharge or HELP repayments.
Super guarantee is 12% from 1 July 2026, but that is paid by your employer on top of your salary, not deducted from it. The maximum contribution base is $270,830. So if your annual salary calculator shows $100,000, your employer must contribute an additional $12,000 to your super fund.
Why the index matters
The salary index gives you a quick, standardised way to compare pay across different roles, states, and industries. Instead of trying to remember dozens of dollar figures, you can think in index points. An index of 100 is the national average; above that is above average, below is below average.
For example, if you are considering a job in Western Australia (index 106.9, annualised $115,825) versus Victoria (index 98, $106,137), the index tells you that full-time workers in WA typically earn about 9% more than those in Victoria. An annual salary calculator can help you see how a specific offer compares to those state benchmarks.

Limitations and caveats
The salary index is a benchmark based on full-time adult ordinary-time earnings. It does not represent a specific job offer or award classification. Your actual pay may be influenced by your award, enterprise agreement, or individual contract. The national minimum wage and award rates are legal minimums; many workers earn more.
Also, the index uses gross pay before tax and super. Take-home pay estimates are rough and ignore factors like HELP debts, salary sacrifice, and the Medicare levy surcharge. Always consult a tax professional for personal advice.
Questions people ask
How do I use an annual salary calculator to find my salary index?
Enter your hourly, weekly, or monthly pay into the calculator to get your annual gross figure. Then divide that number by $108,352 (the national line) and multiply by 100. For example, an annual salary of $80,000 gives an index of about 73.8, meaning you earn roughly 74% of the national average full-time adult ordinary-time earnings.
What does the salary index tell me about my pay compared to others?
The index shows where your gross annual pay sits relative to the national line of 100. If your index is above 100, you earn more than the average full-time adult; below 100 means less. You can also compare to state or industry averages—for instance, the retail trade industry index is 75.9, so a retail worker earning the industry average would have an index near that figure.
Does the annual salary calculator include tax and super?
Most basic calculators show gross pay only. To estimate take-home pay, you need to deduct tax and Medicare levy. For 2026–27, resident tax rates start at nil up to $18,200, then 15% to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000, and 45% above. Add 2% Medicare levy. Super guarantee is 12% from 1 July 2026, but that is paid by your employer on top of your salary, not deducted from it.
