In Hand Salary Calculator: How Your Take-Home Pay Compares to the National Average

Use our in hand salary calculator to see where your net pay sits against the Australian salary index. Compare gross and after-tax earnings across states and industries.

The national average full-time adult ordinary-time earnings are $108,352 per year (index 100). An in hand salary calculator shows your net pay after tax and Medicare, but the salary index compares gross earnings.

What is an in hand salary calculator?

An in hand salary calculator is a tool that shows your take-home pay after tax and the Medicare levy. In Australia, your gross salary is often quoted as a gross annual figure, but what you actually receive in your bank account is less. The calculator uses the resident tax rates for 2026–27 and the 2% Medicare levy to estimate net pay. It does not include super (which is on top of your gross pay, paid by your employer.

For example, if you earn the national average of $108,352 per year (index 100), your estimated take-home pay is about $78,000 per year (before any HELP or salary sacrifice). The calculator helps you compare job offers or understand your current pay in real terms.

How the salary index works

The Salary Index compares your gross yearly earnings to the national line of full-time adult ordinary-time earnings. The national line is $108,352 per year (index 100). If you earn $54,176, your index is 50. If you earn $162,000, index 150. The index is based on the Australian Bureau of Statistics Average Weekly Earnings data. The national line is $2,083.70 per week. The index is gross only.

Your in hand pay is lower because of tax and Medicare. The calculator shows that difference. For example, a retail worker on index 75.9 ($82,000) takes home about $60,000. A mining worker on index 154.7 ($167,000) takes home about $115,000.

State comparisons

Your state affects your index because average earnings vary. States like the ACT index 109.9 ($119,090) and WA index 106.9 ($115,825) are above the national line. Tasmania index 88.6 ($96,008) is below. An in hand salary calculator for a Tasmanian worker earning $96,000 gross would take home about $68,000. The calculator uses the same tax rates, so the index is a gross benchmark.

Industry examples

Industries show big differences. Mining index 154.7. Professional, scientific and technical index 114.7. Education and training index 105.5. Health care and social assistance index 97.8. Accommodation and food services index 72.5. If you work in accommodation and food services on index 72.5 ($78,500), your take-home is about $57,000. The calculator helps you see that.

Using the in hand salary calculator

To use the calculator, enter your gross annual salary. It applies the tax brackets: nil to $18,200; 15% to $45,000; 30% to $135,000; 37% to $190,000; 45% above. Then subtract 2% Medicare levy. The result is your net pay. For example, a salary of $60,000 (index 55.4) takes home about $46,000. A salary of $100,000 (index 92.3) takes home about $73,000.

Remember, the calculator ignores HELP, salary sacrifice, Medicare levy surcharge, and the Medicare levy reduction. It also assumes you claim the tax-free threshold. For a more precise figure, consult the ATO or a tax professional.

National minimum wage and awards

The national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, $1,004.90 per week, annualised $52,255 (index 48.2). An in hand salary calculator for that gross gives about $42,000 take-home. But many workers are covered by modern awards that pay more. For example, the award floor for entry-level is $25.74 per hour. Casual loading adds 25% to $33.05 per hour. The calculator can handle hourly rates if you annualise them.

Junior rates are lower: under 16 $9.73/hr, 16 $12.51/hr, 17 $15.28/hr, 18 $18.06/hr, 19 $21.81/hr, 20 $25.83/hr. These are percentages of the adult minimum wage. An in hand calculator for a junior worker would show lower take-home.

Superannuation and the calculator

Super guarantee is 12% from 1 July 2026, paid on top of your gross salary up to $270,830. The calculator does not include super because it is not in hand. Your super is separate and goes into your fund. The salary index also uses gross ordinary-time earnings before super.

Tax rates and Medicare

The 2026–27 resident tax rates are used. Medicare levy is 2% flat. The calculator does not include the Medicare levy surcharge (for those without private hospital cover and income above $93,000 single). If you have a HELP debt, repayments are 2% to 10% of income, which the calculator ignores.

How to interpret your index

Your index is your gross yearly salary divided by $108,352 times 100. For example, $70,000 gives index 64.6. $130,000 gives index 120. The in hand calculator shows the net equivalent. You can compare across states and industries using the Salary Index.

Summary

An in hand salary calculator is a practical tool to understand your take-home pay. Combined with the salary index, you can see where your gross earnings sit relative to the national average. Use it to compare job offers, negotiate salary, or plan your budget. Remember that the index is a gross benchmark, and your net pay depends on your personal tax situation.

Questions people ask

What is an in hand salary calculator?

An in hand salary calculator estimates your net pay after deducting income tax and the Medicare levy. It uses your gross annual salary, applies the resident tax rates for 2026–27 (tax-free threshold, progressive brackets up to 45%), and subtracts the 2% Medicare levy. The result is your take-home pay per year, month, or week. It does not include superannuation (which is paid on top), HELP repayments, or salary sacrifice arrangements.

How does the salary index relate to in-hand pay?

The salary index compares gross annual earnings to the national average of $108,352 (index 100). An in hand salary calculator converts that gross figure into net pay. For example, if your gross salary is $108,352, your estimated take-home pay (excluding HELP and surcharges) would be roughly $78,000 after tax and Medicare. The index itself is a gross benchmark, so your index number stays the same regardless of tax, but the calculator helps you understand what that gross amount means in your pocket.

What tax rates does the in hand salary calculator use?

The calculator uses the 2026–27 resident tax rates: no tax on the first $18,200; 15% from $18,201 to $45,000; 30% from $45,001 to $135,000; 37% from $135,001 to $190,000; and 45% above $190,000. It also applies a flat 2% Medicare levy on taxable income. It assumes you claim the tax-free threshold and do not have a HELP debt or Medicare levy surcharge. These rates are set by the Australian Taxation Office.
