Underwater Welder Salary: Award Rates, Super, and Tax in Australia

What an underwater welder earns in Australia: award minimums for hyperbaric welders, salary index comparisons, super guarantee, and tax on take-home pay.

An offshore hyperbaric welder under the Professional Diving Industry Award earns about $2,748 a week, giving a salary index of roughly 132, while an inshore hyperbaric welder earns about $1,343 a week, index around 64.

What is an underwater welder salary?

An underwater welder salary in Australia is set by the Professional Diving Industry (Industrial) Award, which covers divers and support staff working underwater, including those who weld. The award classifies underwater welders as Hyperbaric welders – tradespeople who join metal structures in pressurised underwater environments. Because the work is specialised and hazardous, the pay is higher than many other welding roles.

To understand where an underwater welder salary sits against the national line, we use the Salary Index. The index compares yearly gross pay to full-time adult ordinary-time earnings, which is $108,352 a year (index 100). A figure above 100 means above-average earnings; below 100 means below average.

Award minimums for hyperbaric welders

The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes a pay guide for the Professional Diving Industry Award. The rates below are effective from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2025. The 2026 Annual Wage Review increased award rates by 4.75% from 1 July 2026, so current rates are likely a little higher.

Offshore hyperbaric welder (full-time)

  • Weekly rate: $2,748.17
  • Hourly rate: $72.32
  • Annualised: $2,748.17 × 52 = $142,904.84
  • Salary Index: 132 (well above the national line)

Inshore hyperbaric welder (full-time)

  • Weekly rate: $1,342.70
  • Hourly rate: $35.33
  • Annualised: $1,342.70 × 52 = $69,820.40
  • Salary Index: 64 (below the national line)

Offshore work pays significantly more because of the remote environment, longer shifts, and higher risk. Inshore work is often in harbours, dams, or near-shore structures.

Allowances push pay higher

Base rates are only part of the story. Underwater welders also receive diving allowances based on depth and technique. For example:

  • Diving allowance for a diver (not saturation): $4.99 per metre with a minimum of $74.50 per 12-hour period.
  • Hyperbaric welding allowance: $6.16 per linear millimetre for welds accepted by the client.

These allowances can add hundreds of dollars per shift, especially on deep or complex jobs. A hyperbaric welder on a saturation dive might earn a minimum diving allowance of $372.50 per 12-hour period.

How the salary index compares

The index helps you see where an underwater welder salary ranks. An offshore hyperbaric welder at award minimum (index 132) earns more than the average for Mining (index 154.7) but less than the top end of that industry. An inshore hyperbaric welder (index 64) is below Retail trade (index 75.9) and well below the national average.

For context, the national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, index 48.2. Even an inshore hyperbaric welder earns well above that.

Super guarantee on underwater welder pay

From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee is 12% of ordinary time earnings. For an offshore hyperbaric welder earning $2,748 per week, that’s about $330 per week in super contributions. The maximum contribution base is $270,830, so most underwater welders will have the full 12% paid. Super is on top of the salary, so total remuneration is higher.

Tax on an underwater welder salary

Using 2026–27 resident tax rates (excluding Medicare levy surcharge and HELP):

  • Offshore hyperbaric welder ($142,905):

  • Tax: $5,092 on first $45,000 + $27,000 on next $90,000 + $2,925 on remaining $7,905 = $35,017

  • Medicare levy (2%): $2,858

  • Take-home: $105,030

  • Inshore hyperbaric welder ($69,820):

  • Tax: $5,092 on first $45,000 + $7,446 on next $24,820 = $12,538

  • Medicare levy (2%): $1,396

  • Take-home: $55,886

These are estimates. Actual tax depends on deductions, HELP repayments, and other factors.

State and industry context

Underwater welders work mainly in Manufacturing and Construction, often on oil and gas projects, ship repair, or civil engineering. The industries page shows Mining at index 154.7, which is similar to offshore diving. States with large offshore energy sectors, like Western Australia (index 106.9) and Queensland (index 97.9), may offer more opportunities. The states page has more detail.

Important caveats

The rates above are award minimums. Many underwater welders are paid above award through enterprise agreements or market rates, especially on remote projects. The ABS does not publish median earnings for this occupation, so the award is the best public benchmark. Always check the latest pay guides from the Fair Work Ombudsman for updates.

Summary

An underwater welder salary in Australia varies widely. Offshore hyperbaric welders earn around $143,000 a year (index 132), while inshore welders earn around $70,000 (index 64). Allowances can boost pay significantly. Super at 12% and tax at marginal rates apply. For the most current figures, refer to the Professional Diving Industry Award and the how the index works page.

Questions people ask

What is the typical salary range for an underwater welder in Australia?

Underwater welders are classified as hyperbaric welders under the Professional Diving Industry Award. Minimum weekly pay for offshore work is $2,748 (about $143,000 a year), and for inshore work $1,343 (about $70,000 a year). Actual earnings can be higher with diving allowances and welding bonuses, and experienced welders on remote projects may earn more.

How does superannuation apply to an underwater welder's salary?

From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee is 12% of ordinary time earnings. For an offshore hyperbaric welder earning the award minimum of $2,748 per week, super contributions would be about $330 per week. The maximum super contribution base for 2026–27 is $270,830, so most underwater welders will have the full 12% paid on their salary.

What tax does an underwater welder pay on their earnings?

Using 2026–27 resident tax rates: an offshore hyperbaric welder earning ~$143,000 would pay about $32,500 in income tax plus $2,860 Medicare levy (2%), leaving a take-home of roughly $107,600 before any deductions. An inshore welder earning ~$70,000 would pay about $11,200 tax plus $1,400 Medicare levy, take-home around $57,400. These estimates assume the tax-free threshold and no HELP debt.
