Salary sacrifice car loan explained: how it interacts with award wages and the national minimum wage

Learn how a salary sacrifice car loan affects your pay under awards and the national minimum wage, including tax, super, and the Salary Index.

A salary sacrifice car loan reduces your taxable income but your gross ordinary-time earnings – and therefore your Salary Index – stay the same as your award or minimum wage rate.

What is a salary sacrifice car loan?

A salary sacrifice car loan is an arrangement where you agree to forgo part of your pre-tax salary in exchange for your employer making the payments on a car loan. The sacrificed amount comes out of your gross pay before income tax is calculated, reducing your taxable income. This can lower the tax you pay and effectively make the car loan more affordable. However, the arrangement must comply with Australian tax laws and cannot reduce your pay below the relevant minimum wage or award rate.

How it interacts with awards and the national minimum wage

Australia’s workplace relations system sets minimum pay through the national minimum wage and modern awards. From 1 July 2026, the national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour, $1,004.90 per week, annualised $52,255 (index 48.2). Award minima rose by 4.75% from that date, and many awards pay above the national minimum. For example, the Retail trade industry index is 75.9 (annualised about $82,200), while Accommodation and food services sits at 72.5 (annualised about $78,500).

If you are covered by an award, your employer must pay at least the award rate for your classification. A salary sacrifice car loan cannot reduce your gross ordinary-time earnings below that award minimum. The sacrificed amount is deducted from your gross pay, but your gross pay must remain at or above the award floor. So the arrangement only works if your gross pay is high enough to absorb the sacrifice without dropping below the minimum.

For example, if you are on the national minimum wage of $52,255, you cannot salary sacrifice any amount because that would push your gross pay below the minimum. But if you earn, say, $70,000 under a higher award or enterprise agreement, you could sacrifice up to $17,745 before hitting the minimum wage floor. In practice, employers offering salary packaging often set a minimum gross salary threshold to ensure compliance.

Salary Index implications

The Salary Index measures your gross ordinary-time earnings against the national line of $108,352 (index 100). Your index is calculated as your yearly gross pay divided by $108,352, times 100. A salary sacrifice car loan does not change your gross pay – it is a pre-tax deduction from that gross amount. So your index remains the same as your award or minimum wage rate. For instance, if you earn $80,000 under a professional services award (index about 73.8), your index stays 73.8 even if you salary sacrifice $10,000 for a car loan.

This is important because the index is a benchmark for your role, not your take-home pay. When comparing salaries across industries or states, always use the gross figure before any sacrifice. For example, the Mining industry index is 154.7 (annualised $167,600), while Education and training is 105.5 (annualised $114,300). If a miner salary sacrifices a car loan, their index remains 154.7.

Tax and super considerations

Salary sacrifice reduces your taxable income, so you pay less income tax. For the 2026–27 year, resident tax rates (excluding Medicare) are: nil up to $18,200; 15% from $18,201 to $45,000; 30% to $135,000; 37% to $190,000; 45% above. Plus a 2% Medicare levy. If you sacrifice $10,000 from a $80,000 salary, your taxable income drops to $70,000, saving you $3,000 in tax (30% bracket) plus $200 in Medicare levy. But the loan repayments are made by your employer, so you effectively use pre-tax dollars.

Super guarantee is calculated on your ordinary time earnings, which includes the sacrificed amount. Your employer must pay 12% super on your gross salary before the sacrifice, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. So your super contributions are not reduced by the arrangement. This is a key difference from salary sacrificing into super, where the sacrificed amount goes into your super fund.

State and industry notes

State and industry benchmarks can help you see where your pay sits. For example, the states page shows that NSW has an index of 101.2 (annualised $109,658), while Tasmania is 88.6 (annualised $96,008). If you work in a state with a higher average wage, you may have more room to salary sacrifice without hitting award minimums. Similarly, high-paying industries like Mining (index 154.7) or Professional, scientific and technical (114.7) often have salary packaging options, while lower-paying industries like Retail trade (75.9) or Accommodation and food services (72.5) may not offer such benefits because the gross pay is too close to the minimum.

How to check your own situation

To understand how a salary sacrifice car loan affects your pay, start with your award or agreement rate. Use pay guides to find your minimum hourly rate. Then calculate your gross annual pay. Subtract the proposed sacrifice amount – your gross pay must stay above the award minimum. Then estimate your tax saving using the 2026–27 brackets. Remember that your Salary Index is based on gross pay, so it won’t change. Finally, check with your employer whether they offer salary packaging and what conditions apply. The arrangement must be approved by the Australian Taxation Office and cannot be part of a salary that is already below the minimum.

Common questions

If you are considering a salary sacrifice car loan, keep in mind that it is a binding arrangement. Once you sign, your employer deducts the agreed amount each pay period. You cannot easily cancel it. Also, the loan is in your name, and if you leave the job, you may have to take over the repayments. Always get independent financial advice before entering into such an agreement.

Questions people ask

Can I salary sacrifice a car loan if I'm paid at the national minimum wage?

Yes, but only if your employer offers salary packaging and the arrangement does not reduce your gross pay below the national minimum wage or the applicable award minimum. The national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, $1,004.90 per week, annualised $52,255 (index 48.2). Your gross pay must stay at or above that floor after the sacrifice is deducted.

Does salary sacrifice affect my super guarantee?

No. Super guarantee (12% from 1 July 2026) is calculated on your ordinary time earnings, which includes the amount you salary sacrifice. So your employer must pay super on your gross salary before the sacrifice, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. The sacrifice reduces your taxable income but not your super contributions.

How does a salary sacrifice car loan affect my Salary Index?

Your Salary Index is based on your gross ordinary-time earnings before any salary sacrifice. For example, if you earn the national minimum wage ($52,255 annualised), your index is 48.2. A salary sacrifice car loan does not change that figure because it is a pre-tax deduction, not a reduction in gross pay. The index reflects your award or minimum wage rate, not your taxable income.
