NBL salary: How state and industry differences affect pay in Australia's National Basketball League

Wondering about NBL salary in Australia? We explain how state and industry benchmarks compare, using the Salary Index to show where professional basketball pay sits against nationa

No precise NBL salary figure is publicly available from the Australian Bureau of Statistics or Fair Work Ombudsman; NBL players are typically covered by individual contracts, not awards, so their pay varies widely by experience, team, and state.

What is the NBL salary?

When people search for "nbl salary," they usually mean the pay of players in Australia's National Basketball League. Unlike most jobs in Australia, NBL salaries are not set by a modern award or the national minimum wage. Instead, each player negotiates an individual contract with their club. That makes it hard to pin down a single figure — and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) doesn't publish a separate category for professional basketball earnings.

This guide uses the Salary Index to show where an NBL salary might sit against the national line, and how state and industry differences affect pay across Australia.

The salary index baseline

The Salary Index measures yearly gross pay against the national line of 100. That line is full-time adult ordinary-time earnings: $2,083.70 per week, annualised to $108,352 (ABS Average Weekly Earnings, May 2026). If a job pays exactly that amount, its index is 100. Anything above 100 means above-average earnings; below 100 means below.

For context, the national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.46 per hour, $1,004.90 per week, annualised $52,255, index 48.2. An NBL player earning, say, $150,000 per year would have an index around 138. That is well above the national line.

State differences in earnings

Where you play matters. The states page shows how full-time adult ordinary-time earnings vary across Australia:

  • ACT: index 109.9 (annualised $119,090)
  • WA: index 106.9 ($115,825)
  • NSW: index 101.2 ($109,658)
  • VIC: index 98.0 ($106,137)
  • QLD: index 97.9 ($106,064)
  • SA: index 94.6 ($102,450)
  • NT: index 95.2 ($103,173)
  • TAS: index 88.6 ($96,008)

An NBL player in Perth (WA) or Canberra (ACT) is likely to earn a higher base salary than a player in Hobart (TAS) or Adelaide (SA), reflecting the local labour market. Clubs in higher-index states may also face higher costs of living, so take-home pay after tax and rent can vary.

Industry comparisons

The industries page lists indices for broad sectors. While professional sports isn't a separate category, you can compare NBL pay to industries that share similar skill demands:

  • Mining: index 154.7 (high, often remote)
  • Professional, scientific and technical: index 114.7
  • Education and training: index 105.5
  • Health care and social assistance: index 97.8
  • Retail trade: index 75.9
  • Accommodation and food services: index 72.5

NBL players are highly skilled athletes, so their pay likely sits closer to the professional services index (114.7) or above. But because NBL contracts are private, we can't confirm an exact industry match.

How awards and minimum wages apply

The Fair Work Ombudsman explains that employees not covered by an award or registered agreement are entitled to the National Minimum Wage. NBL players are not covered by a modern award — the Fair Work Commission's Modern Awards Pay Database does not list a basketball award. Instead, players sign individual contracts that set pay above the minimum.

From 1 July 2026, the national minimum wage rose 4.75% to $26.46 per hour. Even a rookie NBL player would earn well above that. The super guarantee is 12% from 1 July 2026, applied to earnings up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830.

Tax and take-home pay

Resident tax rates for 2026–27 (excluding Medicare) are:

  • $0–$18,200: nil
  • $18,201–$45,000: 15%
  • $45,001–$135,000: 30%
  • $135,001–$190,000: 37%
  • $190,001+: 45%

Plus a 2% Medicare levy. An NBL player earning $150,000 would pay roughly $33,000 in tax plus $3,000 Medicare levy, leaving about $114,000 take-home. That's before any HELP repayments or salary sacrifice.

Why no precise figure?

The ABS does not publish NBL-specific earnings. The Employee Earnings and Hours survey (January 2026) covers all employees but doesn't break out professional sports. The Monthly Employee Earnings Indicator (June 2026) tracks total wages paid to 15.5 million jobs, but again no NBL detail.

Fair Work Ombudsman and Fair Work Commission sources confirm that professional athletes are not listed in their databases for NBL.

So when you search for "nbl salary," you rely on context. The Salary Index helps compare any pay figure to the national line using state and industry benchmarks.

Three things to remember

  1. **NBL salary is not a single number. It varies by experience, team, state, and contract.
  2. **State differences matter: a player in WA or ACT likely earns more than one in TAS.
  3. **Industry differences: NBL players earn above the national line, but not published by any required sources.

Questions people ask

What is the average NBL salary in Australia?

The average NBL salary is not publicly reported by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) or Fair Work Ombudsman. NBL players are covered by individual contracts, not modern awards, so pay varies widely. The Salary Index baseline (100) is $108,352 per year (full-time adult ordinary-time earnings). Most NBL players earn above this, but no official average exists.

How does an NBL salary compare to the national minimum wage?

The national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.46 per hour, $1,004.90 per week (index 48.2). NBL players earn significantly more, often exceeding the full-time adult ordinary-time earnings index of 100. However, because NBL contracts are private, exact comparisons are uncertain.

Are NBL players covered by a modern award?

No, NBL players are not covered by a modern award. Professional athletes in Australia are typically employed under individual agreements or enterprise agreements, which set pay above award minima. The Fair Work Commission does not list a specific award for the NBL. Players should check their contract for minimum entitlements.
