Hypnotherapist Salary Australia: State and Industry Differences

Explore hypnotherapist salary Australia with state and industry differences. Learn about pay benchmarks, award coverage, and how the salary index applies.

Median weekly earnings for hypnotherapists are not published by the ABS, making a precise salary index figure uncertain. However, the occupation falls under the Health Care and Social Assistance industry (index 97.8) and often involves part-time work.

What is a hypnotherapist salary in Australia?

When you search for "hypnotherapist salary Australia", you're looking for how much this niche health profession pays. Hypnotherapists use hypnosis to help clients with issues like anxiety, smoking cessation, and pain management. Unlike mainstream health roles, hypnotherapy sits within the broader category of complementary health therapies. The Australian Bureau of Statistics groups hypnotherapists under "Music, Dance, Drama, Play, Hypnotic, and Related Therapists" (ANZSCO 252299). That grouping includes dance therapists, drama therapists, and music therapists.

The salary data gap

The honest answer is that there is no published median weekly earnings figure for hypnotherapists. The ABS Survey of Employee Earnings and Hours does not release data for 6-digit occupations when the sample is too small or unreliable. Jobs and Skills Australia reports that median weekly earnings for this group are "N/A". That doesn't mean hypnotherapists earn nothing – it means the official statistics can't give you a single number.

What we do know: around 1,200 people work in this occupation nationally. Only 28% work full-time, compared to 64% across all occupations. The average full-time week is 40 hours, slightly below the all-occupations average of 44 hours. The median age is 45, and 78% are women. These figures suggest a profession with many part-time and self-employed practitioners.

How the salary index applies

Salary Index uses a benchmark where 100 equals full-time adult ordinary-time earnings – $2,083.70 per week or $108,352 per year (ABS Average Weekly Earnings, May 2026). Without a median figure for hypnotherapists, we can't calculate a precise index. But we can look at the industries where hypnotherapists work.

Most hypnotherapists are in Health Care and Social Assistance, which has an industry index of 97.8. That's slightly below the national line. A smaller number work in Education and Training, where the index is 105.5. If a hypnotherapist were a full-time employee in health care, they might earn around $106,000 per year – but that's a rough industry benchmark, not a quote for the role.

State differences

Jobs and Skills Australia data shows 30% of hypnotherapists work in New South Wales. Victoria also has a large share (exact figure suppressed). The state salary indices from our on-site reference give a general picture of how pay varies by location:

  • New South Wales: index 101.2 ($109,658 annualised)
  • Victoria: index 98.0 ($106,137)
  • Queensland: index 97.9 ($106,064)
  • South Australia: index 94.6 ($102,450)
  • Western Australia: index 106.9 ($115,825)
  • Tasmania: index 88.6 ($96,008)
  • Northern Territory: index 95.2 ($103,173)
  • ACT: index 109.9 ($119,090)

These are all-occupation averages. A hypnotherapist in Western Australia or the ACT might earn more than one in Tasmania, but the part-time nature of the work means actual take-home pay could be lower.

Award coverage and minimum rates

If you're an employed hypnotherapist, your pay may be set by a modern award. The most likely is the Health Professionals and Support Services Award [MA000027]. This award covers health professionals in private hospitals, day surgeries, and clinics. It includes classification levels for allied health professionals. From 1 July 2026, award minimum rates rose by 4.75%. The entry-level award floor for a health professional is around $25.74 per hour, but experienced practitioners would be classified higher.

Some hypnotherapists in community settings may fall under the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award [MA000100]. That award has different classifications and pay rates. From 1 December 2026, home care and disability employees receive an initial increase of up to 15%.

Many hypnotherapists are self-employed and set their own fees. In that case, there is no award rate – your income depends on client numbers, session fees, and business costs.

Industry context

Hypnotherapy is a small occupation. The Health Care and Social Assistance industry (index 97.8) employs most practitioners. Education and Training (index 105.5) is the other main sector. Both industries have different pay structures. In health care, you might be employed by a clinic or hospital. In education, you could work for a training organisation or university.

For comparison, the national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour ($52,255 annualised, index 48.2). Even a part-time hypnotherapist should earn above that, but without median data we can't say by how much.

What this means for your search

When you look up "hypnotherapist salary Australia", you're unlikely to find a single authoritative figure. The profession is too small and too varied. Your best approach is to:

  • Check the relevant award if you're an employee (see pay guides from Fair Work Ombudsman)
  • Look at industry benchmarks for Health Care and Social Assistance (industries)
  • Consider state differences – pay tends to be higher in WA and the ACT (states)
  • Understand that part-time work is common, so annual income may be less than full-time benchmarks

The salary index is a useful tool for comparing any role to the national line. For hypnotherapists, the index is uncertain, but the industry context suggests earnings around or slightly below the all-occupations average for full-time workers. For part-time or self-employed practitioners, income can vary widely.

Final note on super and tax

If you're an employee, your employer must pay super guarantee of 12% (from 1 July 2026) on top of your salary. The maximum super contribution base is $270,830. For tax, resident rates for 2026–27 start at nil up to $18,200, then 15% to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000, and 45% above. Add the 2% Medicare levy. Self-employed hypnotherapists need to manage their own super and tax obligations.

Questions people ask

What is the average hypnotherapist salary in Australia?

The Australian Bureau of Statistics does not publish median weekly earnings for hypnotherapists specifically (ANZSCO 252299). The occupation is grouped with other creative and complementary therapists, and the sample size is too small for a reliable estimate. Many hypnotherapists are self-employed or work part-time, so employee salary data may not represent typical earnings. For employed hypnotherapists, pay may be set by the Health Professionals and Support Services Award or negotiated individually.

Which award covers hypnotherapists in Australia?

Hypnotherapists employed in health care settings may be covered by the Health Professionals and Support Services Award [MA000027]. Those working in community services may fall under the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award [MA000100]. However, many hypnotherapists operate their own private practice and are not covered by an award. It's important to check the specific duties and employer type. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides for these awards.

How does hypnotherapist pay vary by state and industry?

Jobs and Skills Australia data shows that 30% of hypnotherapists work in New South Wales, with Victoria also a major state. The Health Care and Social Assistance industry (index 97.8) employs most hypnotherapists, while Education and Training (index 105.5) is another sector. State salary indices range from 88.6 in Tasmania to 109.9 in the ACT, but these are broad benchmarks for all occupations. Hypnotherapists in higher-index states may earn more, but part-time work and self-employment complicate direct comparisons.
