Average A-League salary: where it sits on the Australian salary index

The average A-League salary is not publicly reported as a single figure. This guide explains how professional soccer pay compares to the national line of $108,352 (index 100).

Without a definitive public source, the average A-League salary is uncertain, but professional players typically earn above the national minimum wage and often above the national full-time average, placing the index well above 100 for many.

What does 'average A-League salary' mean?

The phrase 'average A-League salary' refers to the typical annual gross earnings of a professional soccer player contracted to an A-League club in Australia. Unlike many occupations where the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publishes industry-wide averages, professional sports salaries are not captured in the standard ABS industry breakdowns. The A-League is a relatively small employer, and player contracts are confidential commercial arrangements. As a result, no single official figure exists for the average A-League salary.

Where does an A-League salary sit on the Australian salary index?

The Salary Index benchmarks any gross annual salary against the national line of full-time adult ordinary-time earnings. As of May 2026, that line is $2,083.70 per week, or $108,352 per year (index 100). Men's full-time ordinary-time earnings average $113,412 (index 104.7) and women's $100,594 (index 92.9).

For an A-League player, the index depends heavily on their contract. The national minimum wage (2026) is $52,255 per year (index 48.2). A player on a minimum contract – often speculated to be around $50,000 to $60,000 – would sit near or slightly below the national line, with an index of 46–55. A mid-range player earning $120,000 would have an index of 111, above the national average. Marquee players on $400,000 or more would have an index of 369 or higher, placing them in the top few percent of Australian earners.

Without a published average, it is reasonable to assume that the typical A-League player earns above the national minimum wage and likely above the all-industries average, given the specialised skill and limited number of positions. However, the spread is wide, and many players earn below the national full-time average.

How is the salary index calculated for a player?

To find a player's index, take their annual gross salary (including any guaranteed match fees but excluding bonuses that are not ordinary-time earnings) and divide by $108,352, then multiply by 100. For example:

  • $80,000 salary → 80,000 / 108,352 × 100 = index 73.8
  • $200,000 salary → 200,000 / 108,352 × 100 = index 184.6

Remember that the index uses gross ordinary-time earnings. Superannuation (12% from 1 July 2026) is additional and not included in the index. Tax is applied after super. For a resident player earning $200,000 in 2026–27, the estimated tax (including 2% Medicare levy) would be about $60,000, leaving a take-home of $140,000. The index remains 184.6 regardless of tax.

Awards and agreements for A-League players

Professional footballers in Australia are covered by the Professional Footballers Award 2020 or a club-specific enterprise agreement. The Fair Work Commission's Modern Awards Pay Database sets minimum rates for classifications such as 'professional footballer'. However, the A-League collective bargaining agreement typically overrides these minima with higher rates. The award minimum for a professional footballer (as of 1 July 2026, after a 4.75% increase) might be around $25–$30 per hour, but full-time players are usually paid an annual salary rather than an hourly rate.

For comparison, the national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour (index 48.2 annualised). A player on a $100,000 salary would be earning an effective hourly rate of about $48 if they work a standard 40-hour week, well above the minimum.

State and industry context

A-League clubs are located across Australia, and the salary index varies by state. For example, a player in New South Wales (state index 101.2) would be compared to a state line of $109,658, while a player in Western Australia (state index 106.9) would have a higher state line of $115,825. If a player's salary is $110,000, they would be below the WA state line but above the NSW line. See states for more detail.

The A-League is classified under the 'Arts and recreation services' industry by the ABS, which has an industry index of 90.1 (average $97,624). However, professional sports is a small subset of that industry, and player salaries are typically higher than the industry average.

Why no official average?

The ABS Average Weekly Earnings survey covers all industries but does not publish a separate category for 'A-League players'. The sample size is too small to produce reliable estimates. The Fair Work Ombudsman and Fair Work Commission publish award rates but not average actual earnings. The Australian Taxation Office releases income data by occupation, but 'footballer' is grouped broadly and not specific to the A-League.

Therefore, any figure for the 'average A-League salary' found online is likely an estimate from media reports or player union statements, not an official statistic. For a more reliable picture, you would need to consult the Professional Footballers Australia or the Australian Professional Leagues directly.
